One form, several insurance credits

The Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form, OIR-B1-1802, is the state's standard checklist of how well a house resists hurricane wind. An authorized inspector fills it out, and your insurer reads it to decide which wind credits apply. Florida law requires insurers to tell you what discounts and credits they offer for wind-resistant construction.

The current revision took effect on April 1, 2026.

The rows on the form

Feature What the inspector records
Building code The code edition in force when the roof was permitted
Roof covering Whether the roofing product and install meet code
Roof deck attachment How the plywood is nailed to the trusses
Roof-to-wall attachment Clips or straps tying the roof to the walls
Roof geometry The roof's shape. Hip roofs generally score better than gables
Secondary water resistance A sealed deck in case the roof covering blows off
Opening protection Shutters, or impact-rated windows and doors

Most of those rows are about the roof, which is why a replacement can change your answers so much.

Where a new roof moves the answers

We build each replacement to the current Florida Building Code. On a re-roof that generally means re-nailing the deck at tighter spacing and sealing it with a secondary water barrier. Both upgrades show up on the form.

When the roof passes final inspection, we arrange the wind mitigation inspection at no charge and you receive the signed form. Send it to your agent and ask for any credits you now qualify for. Our wind mitigation guide walks through the form row by row.

My Safe Florida Home grants

The state's My Safe Florida Home program can help pay for hurricane upgrades, roof work included. In outline:

  1. Free state inspection. A program inspector visits and lists recommended improvements. You must use theirs.
  2. Eligibility. Grants go to homesteaded, site-built single-family homes built before January 1, 2008, insured for $700,000 or less, owned by a low- or moderate-income homeowner.
  3. Approval before work. Nothing can start until the grant is approved.
  4. The match. For each $1 you spend, the state adds $2, up to $10,000. Low-income homeowners can qualify without a match.
  5. Payment after. The program reimburses once the work passes a final inspection.

Roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment and secondary water resistance can qualify when your inspection report recommends them. Funding depends on the Legislature and applications open in rounds, so check mysafeflhome.com for the current status. Our My Safe Florida Home guide has the details.

The roofer's half of the job

A qualified inspector completes and signs the form. Our part is building the roof so the answers come out well, with the deck nailing and sealed deck the code calls for, installed by our own crews under license CCC1326792. To pay for a new roof over time, see financing.

Start with a free roof inspection, and we will tell you whether your roof is due for replacement.

Wind mitigation questions

Still have a question? Call (407) 970-9746. A real person answers.

How much can a wind mitigation inspection save on insurance in Florida?

It depends on your house, your carrier and which features you have. Florida insurers must tell you the range of wind mitigation credits they offer when a policy is issued and at each renewal. Ask your agent for that discount chart and compare it with your report.

How many years does a wind mitigation report last in Florida?

Insurers generally accept a completed OIR-B1-1802 for up to five years, provided nothing material about the house has changed and the form has no errors. Replacing the roof counts as a material change, which is why a new roof calls for a new report.

Who can sign a wind mitigation form in Florida?

Florida law lists who can sign the OIR-B1-1802 form. It names professional engineers and architects, certified building code inspectors, licensed general, building and residential contractors, licensed home inspectors with hurricane mitigation training, plus anyone else your insurer recognizes as qualified. Confirm your insurer accepts the inspector before you rely on a report.

Is there a new wind mitigation form for 2026?

Yes. Inspections on or after April 1, 2026 must use OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 04/26). According to Citizens, an older 01/12 form still counts if it was completed in the five years before that date and nothing about the house changed.

Is the free My Safe Florida Home inspection the same as a wind mitigation report?

They are related but not identical. My Safe Florida Home sends its own inspector to assess hurricane features and recommend upgrades, and you cannot substitute your own inspector. That visit is the first step toward a state grant. Your insurer may still want a standard OIR-B1-1802 form.
